Designing the layout

I got to play around with different fonts and their purposes, and how to use them appropriately. I then got to learn about micro, conventional, and macro spacing and theirs too. After that, I learned that when writing headlines, it's better to have a title that has a visual/verbal connection.

Here's an improved version of my previous layout, incorporating spacing!

Designing a table of contents

So I moved on to the table of contents. This is going to be the second page in my finished magazine. It needed to have correct usage of spacing, internal and external margins, and photos that were related to the main article. I also got to experiment with different fonts, and decided I would choose a "fancy" one for my layout.

Designing the Cover

I designed my magazine's cover in StudioWorks. I decided to put the main picture in the back and all the text in front. Sooner or later I will use this for my actual magazine. I had to put a title, dominant picture, headline, secondary headlines, additional pictures, internal and external margins, and correct usage of micro, conventional, and macro spacing.

The importance of copy

I was put in a group of people to read a children's book, then re-read it but only looking at the pictures. We concluded that yes, pictures did retell the story somewhat accurately, but they leave out many important details to the story.  It goes the same for a copy, and that you can't cover an entire event with only pictures.

Magazine Layout Anatomy - Dan Dressler

Designing the layout

I designed the layout of my magazine by planning it on a ladder. I decided that it would be a weekly magazine with 67 pages. I carefully thought it out, with all the ads, sources, and content factored in. I also thought of some good story names for my magazine that would be easy to read, relevant, and kind of catch the reader's attention. This was very tedious but it will pay off.
